Streptocarpus are my passion for many years. Why them? To such a question it is rarely possible to give the unequivocal answer. In this group of plants combination of power and the extraordinary vitality with the gentle beauty is fascinating - distinctive features for the majority of plant world but in this case exceptionally attractive for me.

Streptocarpus genus comes from South Africa, and most species are epiphytes growing on trees and in forest soil. This implies their needs. They require semi-shade , moist air and humus soil.

Watering should be adapted to the streptocarpus needs, and may vary depending on temperature, sunlight, plant size etc. It is important to water less often in winter, and possibly as often as twice a day in summer. In general streptocarpus do not tolerate overwatering as well as when pots stand in water.

The common method of fertilization is using soluble fertilizer rich in phosphorus and potassium. However it is important to limit the dose: only 1/3 of the amount recommended for other plants should be used. Streptocarpus doesn't tolerate soil salinity.

Streptocarpus is a plant loving halves: half-shade, half of water, half of the fertilizer.

Streptocarpus are resistant to most pests and diseases. They are only occasionally attacked by some types of aphids and thrips. Pests can be controlled with soil sticks with a pesticide, by watering with systemic pesticide, or by spraying plants with insecticides. Reducing watering, especially in winter, prevents fungal diseases.

Streptocarpus like light airy substrate. In case of lack of high quality fibrous peat, up to 20% of perlite and vermiculite may be added to soil.
